Beautiful, Sunny and 80

We finally made time today to go explore a little. It was the perfect day...sunny and a warm 80 degrees. There are so many places we wanted to go, we didn't know where to start. Ed chose Portland Head Lighthouse. It is located in Ft. Williams which was an old fort of some sort. I could find much info on it. But it has alot of open grassy areas and it overlooks the ocean. It also has a tiny unattractive beach. There are bits of the fort here and there also. But the star is the lighthouse.
George Washington asked two masons from Portland in 1787, while Maine was still part of the colony of Massachusetts, to construct a lighthouse on Portland Head. Since the colonial Government was poor he asked that the materials used to build the lighthouse be taken from the fields and shores. The old tower, built of rubblestone, still stands as one of the four colonial lighthouses that have never been rebuilt. The tower was completed during the year 1790 and first lighted January 10, 1791.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a native of Portland, often visited the Portland Head Lighthouse and was friends with the keepers. It is believed he received inspiration at the lighthouse for his 1849 poem The Lighthouse.
